Sea Trials
A sea trial is highly recommended to ensure all equipment and machinery are in working condition. Purchasing a pre-owned vessel without a sea trial could be likened to buying a used vehicle without a test drive.

What is generally involved:

  • testing the engine under various loads
  • visually checking for any leaks around the engine hoses
  • checking for loose belts, etc.
  • recording engine temperatures, oil pressure, battery charge rate, and speed at different RPM on available gauges
  • checking cooling water discharge
  • testing the helm and handling going ahead and astern
  • testing all equipment requiring raw water intake
  • looking for any leaks at the thru-hulls, stern gland, and rudder stock, if accessible
  • checking air conditioner discharge
  • testing electronics
  • raising the sails to ensure proper operation

Basically, the vessel is being tested in a seaway. A typical sea trial runs from 45 minutes to an hour.
