A sea trial is highly recommended to ensure all equipment and machinery are in working condition. Purchasing a pre-owned vessel without a sea trial could be likened to buying a used vehicle without a test drive.
What is generally involved:
- testing the engine under various loads
- visually checking for any leaks around the engine hoses
- checking for loose belts, etc.
- recording engine temperatures, oil pressure, battery charge rate, and speed at different RPM on available gauges
- checking cooling water discharge
- testing the helm and handling going ahead and astern
- testing all equipment requiring raw water intake
- looking for any leaks at the thru-hulls, stern gland, and rudder stock, if accessible
- checking air conditioner discharge
- raising the sails to ensure proper operation
Basically, the vessel is being tested in a seaway. A typical sea trial runs from 45 minutes to an hour.
